Abstract

The system is designed to memorise images and includes a liquid crystal-photoconductor pair. This liquid crystal and photoconductor pair is associated with electrical polarising circuits, a light source which illuminates the pair and a read system. The liquid crystal is a smectique. A liquid crystal and it is initially orientated. The smectic liquid crystals used such that the anistrophy of the dielectric constant can be positive or negative. When the anistrophy is positive the liquid crystal is initially orientated in a planar direction. When the anistrophy of the dielectric constant is negative the initial orientation of the liquid crystal is in a homeotropic direction.
