Abstract

Dropping agents for use in very deep wells (at depths of >4000 m) comprise granular products contg. ZrO2, SiO2 and opt. Al2O3 and Na2O. The ZrO2 content is =85 wt.%, the ZrO2/SiO2 wt. ratio is >=1.5 (2), the Al2O3/SiO2 wt. ratio is 0-1.5 (pref. 0.1-1), and the Na2O/SiO2 wt. ratio is 0-0.04. When exposed to the high pressures prevailing at great depths (e.g. 400-700 bars) the granules break down into coarse particles which still maintain high permeability, unlike glass beads, which are reduced toa powder.
