Abstract

Plants are cultivated by placing thin heat-exchanger sheaths (2) having a large surface area between the plant rows and in contact with the soil. Water is pumped from and to a heat storage reservoir (5) through the sheaths during sunshine hours to store heat and during the coldest hours of the night to heat the soil and air. The upper wall of the sheath is a better thermal insulator than the lower wall. The sheaths are unrolled between the plant rows, and each comprises a flexible pipe of thin opaque plastics and an upper transparent film separated by a space from the pipe. The film is spaced from the pipe by longitudinal pads or ribs.
