Abstract

Fillings for connectors used in conjunction with cables having a thermoplastic insulating covering, comprises a polysiloxane resin contg. 30-70 vol. % (on resin) of 0.1-5 cm dia. glass spheres. Suitable polysiloxane resins are made e.g. by reacting (a) a polysiloxane with Si-bound vinyl gps. and (b) an alpha, omega-dihydrogenpolydiorganosiloxane in the presence of a Pt catalyst. Pref. polysiloxanes are made by reacting (a) a polysiloxane oil with vinyl gps. of formula R1R2R3SiO -Si(R4)(R5)O m- -Si(CH=CH2)(R6)O n-SiR1R2R3, in which R1-R6 (same or different)=1-3C alkyl or phenyl gps. and m and n are whole numbers >0, with a viscosity of 500-1000 cPo at 25 degrees C and a ratio m/n=0.01-0.1; and (b) an alpha, omega-dihydrogenpolysiloxane oil of formula HR1R2O- -Si(R3)(R4)O- p-SiR1R2H in which R1-R4 (same or different)=1-3C alkyl or phenyl and p is a whole number >0 with a viscosity of 5-500 cPo at 25 degrees C. The glass spheres can be injected into the connector first so hold the joined ends of the cable apart and away from the walls of the connector while the castable liq. polysiloxane resin compsn. is injected. The resins have excellent adhesion, heat resistance, low shrinkage and low thermal expansion. Joints can be made in cables carrying up to 30 k V without the use of metal carriers in the connectors to hold the cables in position while the resin is injected, as in previous practice.
