Abstract

A device for improving the heat transfer between a fluid flowing in a tube and the tube comprises internal ribs bearing against the inner tube wall. These ribs are formed by numerous teeth or serrated fittings, extending radially outwards from the centre of the pipe to its inner wall and bearing with a slight spring or elastic force against that wall under the action of a fluid flowing in the one direction, but tending to contract away from the wall when pushed in the other direction. A succession of such fittings is incorporated along the length of the pipe. Pref., each tooth makes an acute angle with the pipe axis and, in the unstressed state, the external dia. of the teeth slightly exceeds the bore of the tube. The outer ends of the teeth may have feet which fit the inner wall surface. The fittings are easily introduced in one direction, since they tend to decrease in dia. when thrust in that direction. In use, the fluid flows in the opposite direction, thereby tending to cause the fittings to expand and brace themselves firmly against the pipe wall. They thus cannot become dislodged, even if the pipe should become blocked. Good heat transfer is obtd. by the tight contact between the fittings and the pipe wall.
