Abstract

A crimped or swollen wiping paper contains an embedded network composed of filaments which contract when heated and form junctions at their intersections. The paper bed is formed around the network, and heating serves to produce the crimping or swelling of the paper. The junction density is pref. 1,000-10,000/M2, and the network has a regular geometrical structure, partic. square or diamond shaped. It can be formed from extruded plastic monofilaments of which the molecular chains have been oriented by draining, partic. polyethylene, polypropylene, or nylon. Pref. mfr. comprises simultaneously to extruding superposed sheets of parallel filaments with an angle between them, the filament junctions having a thickness greater then the filament section. Heat retraction is carried out at 70-160 degrees C. The prod. is used for paper wipes, partic. industrial wipes. The method increases the absorptive power of the paper whilst maintaining its firmness and its low costs.
