Abstract
The use of certain strains of Streptomyces albus and their metabolites and enzymes as antibiotic agents and detoxicants in agriculture and in the food industry is claimed. The strains are CBS 314.76 and CBS 315.76 or related strains, esp. those obtd. by mutation of hybridisation of these strains. The S. albus strains have antibiotic activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and -negative bacteria and fungi, and are esp. useful in that they inhibit the growth of Aspergillus flavus and destroy its toxin (aflatoxin), e.g. on peanuts and potatoes). Cultures of the S. albus strains can be applied to the soil in which the plants (peanuts or potatoes) are grown, or to the harvester crop during storage. The amt. used is pref. >=50,000 spores per g of soil or per g of crop, esp. ca. 100,000 spores per g of soil.
