Abstract

Pyrophoric expandible styrene polymers are classified in terms of particle size by treatment with metallic salt solns. Such polymers are obtd. by suspension polymerisation of styrene or mixt. of styrene with minor quantities of cpds. polymerisable with styrene, pref. acrylonitrile, butadiene, (meth)acrylates, polybutadiene, butadiene-styrene copolymers and satd. and unsatd. copolymers of ethylene and propylene. Polymers are obtd. as particles of 0.1-3.5 mm dia. (pref. 0-5-2). Pref. metallic salts are CaCl2, CaBr2, MgCl2, Ca(OAc)2, K2CO3, Al(OAc)3, alums and mixts. of these salts. Salts are used as aq. solns. at loading of 0.001-0.5 wt. % on polymer (pref. 0.005-0.2). Polymer particle size is controlled.
