Abstract

Protective covers for the comb of contact probes for the edge of a printed circuit board are made of an elastic material, pref. a cold curing silicone rubber, as a block large enough to accommodate all the contacts and to enclose the borders of their supporting shield. The covers protect the contact from chemical cleaning and from local heat when fitting the contact strip to the board and soldering the connections between the contacts and the board circuit. The elastic material yields to the insertions of the contact probes and forms a seal to prevent contact with chemicals during e.g. dip cleaning. Silicone rubbers provide a suitable combination of heat, chemical and impact resistance plus flexibility. Cold cast blocks can be formed around conventional prefabricated earthing connectors and/or probe patterns.
