Abstract

The reaction is carried out using a Pt anode in a bath comprising the methyl benzene cpd., methanol, an inert solvent selected from halogenoalkanes and satd. aliphatic nitriles and, as electrolyte support, sulphuric acid or sulphonic acids and their salts with tert. amines and opt. water. In the case of toluene oxidn., methyl benzyl ether is used to produce benzyl alcohol and p-aminoaldehyde is used in perfumes and as a flavouring. The process gives economic yields compared with previous processes.
