Abstract
After simple crushing, the rock sample is pyrolysed in an atmosphere of inert gas (pref. argon, helium or nitrogen) at 400-1000 degrees C; from the furnace, the pyrolysis prods. are carried on the same inert gas to a chromatographic appts., where their benzene content is measured. Thus the benzene content of the sample is determined in ppm; this is converted to wt.% of organic carbon by a linear relationship that has been experimentally established (and whose parameters depend on the particular temp. used for the pyrolysis). The appts. used has electromagnetic valves to control the flow of inert gas, and either an infra-red detector in the chromatographic appts., or one using flame ionisation.
