Abstract

New hydroxysulphonate betaines are for formula R1-CH(OH)-CHR2-N+R3R4-R5-SO3-(I) (where R1 and R2 are each alkyl; together contg. 9-16C; R3 and R4 are each 1-5C alkyl or hydroxyalkyl and R5 is 1-4C alkylene or hydroxyalkylene). (I) are pref. used in aq. or aq. alcoholic soln. for antistatic finishing of synthetic fibre materials. In an example, use of 0.5% (I where C(R1 + R2)= 9-12; R3=R4 = Me; R5= (CH2)3) reduced field decay half life from 60 to 0.9 secs. at RH 65%, 20 degrees C, on polyamide fabrics. (I) also have high substantivity for synthetic fibres, and can be applied from exhaust baths.
