Abstract

Safe-handling cabinets which are used when dealings with dangerous substances such as radio-active materials, toxic gases or micro-organisms are normally operated at a pressure below that of the surrounding atmosphere to reduce the risk of escape of contaiminated material. But in the event of an explosion within the cabinet it is necessary to provide an outward pressure relief valve. Such a valve consists simply of a disc (12) resting on a seat (11) provided with an O-ring seal (10). As soon as the pressure within the cabinet rises by a few millibars it pushes the disc (12) upwards to the position (12a) allowing the gases to escape through the hole (6). The relief pressure is determined solely by the weight of the disc (12) and can therefore be very accurately controlled.
