Abstract

A ttpe mandrel building mandrel comprises twin annular drums each comprising a group of four segments which can tilt to reduce their overall diameter. The segments tilt alternately due to collapse of supporting linkages which are shifted by a pair of annular pistons. The segments have recessed sloping shoulders adjacent to the mandrel centre line to allow contraction of a rubber hoop which provides the central zone of the mandrel circumference. The design involves a relatively small number of moving parts, resulting in simplicity of construction and operation. The shells and opt. the pistons of the annular rams may be made from cast aluminium or laminated reinforced resin.
