Abstract

Acid addition salts of morpholine derivs. of formula (I) (where R2 is H, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl phenyl or benzyl) are new. The new acid addition salts are useful as antidepressants and are more active than the corresp. cpds. in which the morpholinylmethoxy gp. is linked to the indenen cleus in the 4-positions. In animal tests the new salts show methamphetamine stereotype-increasing, antireserpine and 5-hydroxytryptophan-potentiating activity, with about half the oral toxicity of known antidepressants. Specific new salts include 2-(7-indenyloxymethyl) morpholine hydrochloride. In an example this is produced by fractional crystallisation from acetone of a mixt. of the hydrochlorides of 2-(4-indenyloxymethyl)-morpholine and 2-(7-indenyloxymethyl)morpholine.
