Abstract

A machine and related process for detaching a fibrous or soft cover from a hard nut or stone of a fuit, of the type in which several scraper blades dig conjointly into the cover at one end of the fruit under the action of a ram pushing axially on the other end. Each scraper can then be moved outwards from the axis of the fruit so as to scrape cover material away from nut or stone. Steady guides are used to support the fruit during scraping. One guide is provided between each adjacent pair of scrapers. Ram action causes the guides to penetrate the cover and contact the shell of nut or stone adjacent to the end of the fruit opposite to the ram. The guides can be fixed or capable of displacement away from the axis to allow the nut or fruit to be pushed right through the guides. Used for destoning fruit and, more partic., stripping the outer fibre cover from a coconut as a preliminary to processing the nut for copra mfr. The machine is suitable for plantation and factory use; it can be manually or power operated. Automatic location and support ensure efficient, high yield removal of cover material.
