Abstract

The thickness of the refractory lining of a metallurgical vessel is measured by introducing at a specific point a source of gamma-radiation of known intensity. Measurements are taken at specific points, outside the vessel, the intensity of the radiation which has passed through the lining. The values obtd. are compared with reference values obtd. from the furnace with a new lining, the differences being in direct relation to the variation in the lining thickness. For each series of measurements, the remaining thickness of the lining can be deduced. The thickness of the lining in hot metallurgical vessels e.g. electric arc furnaces, can be determined.
