Abstract

A flame photometer detects contaminants in an oxygen-contg. gas, incorporating a burner and an analysis system. The burner is housed in a space into which hydrogen is passed and reacts in two stages with the oxygen-contg. gas, which is circulated by a pump. The analysis unit incorporates a photomultiplier which sees, through an interferential filter, the flame produced in a refractory glass sleeve, at the first stage, i.e. when hydrogen is in excess in relation to the oxygen in the gas. The flame comes into contact with a metallic element able to react in the flame to form a volatile cpd. The volatile cpd. emits a luminous radiation, by thermal excitation in the first or second stage flame, which is easily detected. The invention enlarges the possibilities of the detection appts. compared to existing appts. in which the flame produced at the first stage is used to detect atoms. or molecules which gives a direct luminous reaction. The invention uses either the first or second stage flame, to detect elements, e.g. chlorine and other halogens, which do not give a direct reaction.
