Abstract
The hydraulic control of an automobile gear box utilises a pump which supplies oil to a slide valve. In addition, a pressure regulator controls the pressure to a value P which is proportional to the engine torque and a value P2 proportional to engine speed. Three receptors control the three forward speeds. Two receptors are supplied continuously with oil at pressure P2. The position of the slide valve determines which receptor is supplied with a pressure P3 which is also proportional to engine torque. Thus the speed selected is a function of engine torque.
