Abstract
Prodn. of tubular film involves extruding molten thermoplastics (I), cooling with a directional gas stream so that it (partly) sets and passing downwards over a cooling mandrel. (I) is pre-expanded in the die before extrusion and the press. inside the tube is kept constant at 0.254-2.54 cm water column. Cooling is carried out continuously with a high speed air stream (II), from a slit in the cooling mandrel, the slit being at an angle of 25-35 degrees to the horizontal, in an amt. of 2.83-7.08 Nm3/min. (II) cools the inside of the tube and provides an air cushion between this and the mandrel, preventing sticking. High quality film can be produced in relatively high amts. (ca 181 kg/h of 178 cm wide lay-flat tube). Higher rates of prodn. (227-245 kg/h) are possible with plastics which are difficult to process (e.g. polypropylene).
