Abstract

An appts. for collecting solar energy and converting it into heat employs circulation of hot air or water or both or converts it into electrical energy. The collector consists of metal plates, cast or drawn, of the Venetian shutter type, expanded metal, or similar. They possess reliefs forming, horizontally, undulations and, vertically deflectors inclined towards the front and towards the rear of the vertical axis of the plates. The deflectors make the fluid circulate from the part exposed to the sun towards the rear part of the plates and from below upwards, by convection, forming a solar trap, preventing energy reflection and increasing absorbant power. For direct prodn. of electricity, the plates are of Si, Cds, CuS or other materials having the same qualities, or they have a polycrystalline surface layer of cadmium and sulphur ions to constitute the electrodes of a photovoltaic pile. The appts. incorporates in addn. electric heating elements or radiators to replace the solar energy at night or during cloudy conditions. The plates allow solar, radiations to be received at all angles during the sun's course from rise to setting, whatever its height above the horizon. The form creates a rapid movement of air towards the heating elements. The plates act not only as hot air deflectors but as heat sources when they are themselves heated, and they form a thermal trap.
