Abstract

A piece of furniture, such as a bed or a chair, includes a frame to which is fixed either a sheet of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic incorporating steel wires or carbon fibres, or, alternatively, a sheet of woven polyester (pref. 'Diolen' RTM.), fibres embedded in resin. The membrane is soft enough to flex locally, and sufficient reinforcement is included to prevent it rupturing. The steel wire, or carbon fibres, reinforcement may extend in one direction only, or it may be a mesh, possibly included in a glass-fibre cloth at the time of weaving.
