Abstract
Fluids leaking into a cavity are stopped by injecting into the cavity an absorbant substance which swells on contact with the fluid. The injection is made from a spray, a pressure gun, or an aerosol for foam or powder. For preventing loss of hydrocarbon flids the absorbant is gr granular polypropylene or polyurethane foam and for the treatment of biological fluids, esp. blood, suitable abo sorbants include calcium alginate, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, sodium alkyl sulphate and oxidised methyl cellulose. Such absorbants may be mixed with hemostate, antifibrinolytics, K1 vitamins and analgesics. Typical haemostats are silver nitrate, chromic acid and anhydride, hydrogen peroxide, thromboplastin and an oligo-colloidal solution of adrenalone. Typical analgesics are tetracaine, xylocaine, and chloroform. The process is partic. useful in stopping bleeding, e.g. in the nose, uterus, or digestive tract. The method is quick and painless. A typical formulation contained a sodium alkyl sulphate-ethylene glycol foam and 5% disinfectant, keeping the soln. at pH 8.5, the disinfectant contg 38% triethanolamine 5% propionic acid, and 57% ethyldiethylene glycol.
