Abstract

An at least substantially aliphatic starting polymer A is chlorinated at elevated temperature in a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent. A chlorinated polymer product is deposited in solid form from the solution by treatment with steam or hot water. The chlorination is carried out in the presence of an additional chlorinatable polymer B, which is chlorinated under the reaction conditions used to give a chlorinated polymer. The chlorination product of B has a second-order transition temperature which is at least 20 DEG C below that of the chlorination product of A. The chlorination product of B is compatible with the chlorination product of A in the mixing ratio of the two chlorination products arising in the chlorination. Chlorinated polymer products prepared in this way in solid form contain only a small proportion of residual solvent compared with chlorinated polymer products prepared by known processes and are therefore particularly suitable for further processing, for example for the production of paints.
