Abstract
The light amplifying system is of the type which has an amplifying medium having active centres. One of the faces (28) of the medium being exposed to optical pumping device (24). The amplifying medium has a concentration of active centres which increases with the distance to the optical pumping device. The amplifying medium is in the form of a plate pumped on one face only. The plate (20) is formed from a number of strips (21, 22, 23) placed side by side. The concentration of active centres being homogeneous in each strip, but the active centres increase from one strip to the other as the distance to the optical pump increases. The amplifier medium is glass and the active centres are trivalent ions of neodymium.
