Abstract

Alternating current flowing in a high voltage line such as at 250 RV is measured using a Faraday cell close to the line. Electroluminescent diodes transmit the cell output via fibre optic conductors to a receiving unit remote from the high voltage lines. The alternating current in a line (2) is coupled (4) to a diode bridge (D1-4) close to the line. Two diodes (D1-2) are electroluminescent diodes producing light for transmission by fibre optic conductors (F1, F2) to a receiver (R1, R2). A differential circuit (14) produces an output in a sense corresponding to current flow and an indicator (16) measures the output. A balance control (10) compensates for mismatched diode (D1, D2) characteristics.
