Abstract

Removal of H2S from gases is effected by reacting the H2S with SO2 in a solvent for sulphur, and sepg. the purified gas from the S soln. The S is then sepd. from the solvent, which is recycled. The solvent is pref. a phenol, esp. m-cresol. The process is pref. carried out by absorbing the H2S (or SO2) in the solvent at 15-80 degrees C and 1-150 (esp. 5-80) bars, and then contacting the soln. with SO2 (or the gas) at 80-180 degrees C (esp. 112-150 degrees C) and 1-150 (esp. 5-80) bars. The process is esp. useful for purifying natural gas and refinery off-gases (e.g. from desulphurisation or catalytic cricking units). The process gives purified gases contg. 0.1% H2S. The S isolated is not contaminated with carbon when the feed gas contains hydrocarbons (cf. the Claus process).
