Abstract

Water-soluble polymers are pred. by (a) forming an aq. soln. containing 20-50 wt.% water-soluble monomer, (b) addining inorganic, water-soluble salt, pref. Na2SO4 and/or NaHCO3, to soln. in sufficient quantity to form a suspension contg. the salt in excess of satn. concn., (c) setting suspension pH 5-9 and (d) catalytically polymerising the monomer suspension at 15-100 degrees C, to form a free-flowing, particulate, crumbly, high mol. wt. polymer. All of free water of monomer suspension is absorbed during polymerisation, so that polymer obtd. can be passed directly to a drier, to remove the absorbed water. Polymers can be used as flocculants, e.g. for clarifying water, in ore-flotation, pptn. of chemicals, waste water treatment, for dehydrating suspensions by filtration, as thickeners, pigment retains in paper mfr., as binders for ceramics, for treating drilling muds and in sec. and tert. oil recovery by flooding with water. Process eliminates need for handling a gelatinous prod. for drying. Mol. wt. properties, re-dispersibility and solubility of polymer are unaffected.
