Abstract

The mercury rotary electrical contact, for a rotating machine, consists of a vein of mercury electrically connecting two relatively-moving parts and partly occupying a slot between these two parts. This slot is maintained under a partial vacuum (e.g. 10-1 mm Hg) at least whilst an electric current is passing through the contact. A circular channel is located in one of the parts, delineating the slot, and a conducting crown is carried by the other part. The mercury occupies the space between this crown and the circular channels. The liquid metal may be sodium-potassium eutectic-instead of mercury.
