Abstract

Process. for prepg. copolymers (I) of 2-6C alkyl acrylates (II) with styrene (III) and acrylonitrile (IV) comprises first copolymerising (II) with 2-15 wt.% (on comonomer mixt.) of a modifying monomers of formula (V) CH2=C(R). CO2. CH(CH3). OO. C(CH3)3 (R=1-6C alkyl or phenyl), at 5-50 degrees in an aq. emulsion in presence of a redox initiator to give a latex of modified alkyl acrylate rubber, then graft polymerising (III) and (IV) onto this rubber at 55-80 degrees C using (III):(IV) wt. ratio 60-90:40-10 and rubber: (III)+(IV) ratio 10-40:90-60; both stages being carried out in presence of anionic emulsifiers. The initial comonomer mixt. can also contain 5-20 wt.% (IV) or 0.5-10 wt.% of a non-conjugated diene. (I) have improved notched-bar impact strengths (e.g. Izod values 20-30 kp. cm/cm2) and resistance to weathering. Process is simpler since first stage is at 1 temp. only and not ate several different temps.
