Abstract

A pressure-sensitive cushion (18) is connected to a pressure gauge, so that the humeral artery is between the humerus and the cushion. The cushion is held in place by a support (10,12,14,16) in opposition to the weight of the arm. This weight is varied by the patient, and the gauge readings are recorded as the pressure on the cushion alters. The pulsations in the artery can be examined by palpation, listening or visually downstream of the cushion, the gauge readings being noted when arm weight causes pulse modifications typical of maximum and minimum arterial pressure.
