Abstract

Ethylene glycol dialkyl ethers are prepd. by adding an olefin to a monoalkyl ether of ethylene glycol, or a polyethylene glycol, in the presence of an ion exchanger in its acid form. The exchanger is dried before use. The monoalkyl ether is pref. the monomethyl, -ethyl, - propyl, -isopropyl, -butyl or -t-butyl ether of monoethylene to octaethylene glycol. The olefin is pref. propylene, which may be of industrial quality. The ion exchanger is pref. a strongly acid, crosslinked, sulphonated polystyrene. The reaction is effected at 20-150 degrees C. Process can be used for prepn. of a wide range of prods., including noval cpds. These prods. have a high purity. Suitable for continuous operation on a very large scale.
