Abstract

The level of water in a rain gauge is determined by reading the level against a scale or by using a float and indicator. Problems with these gauges are overcome by having a collector whose height varies as a function of water contained. An indicator permits reading at a distance. A rain gauge comprises a casing (2) mounted on a shaft for mounting on the ground. Water entering a cover (6) passes through holes (12) into a collector (14) supported by wire (26) mounted in a support frame (16) through springs (24) on a bar (22) to provide elastic suspension. A wire (38) attached to the supporting wire (26) is wound onto a pulley (36) whose shaft (32) rotates a pointer (8) on a scale to indicate water content.
