Abstract
The ionisation system consists of a source of periodic ionising electrical impulses and a device to apply these impulses to the air in the inlet manifold in order to ionise the air-fuel mixture before combustion. The ionising impulses have an asymmetrical polarity and the duration of each cycle is short compared with the duration of the combustion phase. The actual duration of each cycle of impulses may be either 88 22 or 2 microseconds and the impulses may be either mainly or entirely or negative polarity. The ionisation system improves the fuel consumption of the engine and at the same time reduces the pollution due to the exhaust gases.
