Abstract

Method comprises adding to the water in the vase (a) a strong mineral acid (I), which is non-oxidising at room temp. and at the concn. used, to pH 3.5-2.0; (b) 0.2-4 wt.% of a saccharide (II) and (c) 0.002-0.02 wt.% of a sulphonic acid BSO3H (III) (B = 8-20C alkyl or alkenyl, or 15-26C alkylphenyl or alkoxyphenyl) or their alkali salts or salts with 1-4C alkyl benzimidazole-2-carbamates. The lifetime of the flowers, esp. long-lasting ones such as chrysanthemums and carnations, is at least doubled. The addition of (II) keeps the water free from moulds and putrefaction for 6 weeks or more.
