Abstract
Prepn. of silylated cyanohydrins comprising directly contacting a carbonyl cpd., opt. in an inert solvent, with a mixt. of trimethylchlorosilane and silver cyanide in presence of catalytic quantities of AlCl3. Yields of 60-85% are obtd. based on AgCN compared with 15-20% by earlier processes. The prods. are intermediates for cyanourethanes and other cyano cpds., and may be hydrolysed to give plant protection agents. Typically, an 80% yield of silylated benzophenone cyanohydrin is obtd. by reaction of 0.1 mole of benzophenone, 0.1 g of AlCl3, 0.1 mole of trimethylchlorosilane and 0.12 mole of Ag CN at 50 degrees C for 3 h.
