Abstract

Aminoalkanols of formula R1CH(OH).CH(R2)N(A)R3, (I), are new. R1 is H or 1-18C alkyl, and R2 is H; R1 and R2 are 1-5C alkyl the total no. of C in R1 and R2 being 9-16. A is H or COXmH3-m. X is halo and m=1-3.R3=H, 1-18C alkyl 2-18C hydroxyalkyl or the gp. (CH2)n.N(R4)A. R4 is H or 8-18C alkyl and n=2-6. (I) must contain >=1 haloacetyl gp.; and >=1 of R1-4 has 8-18C, or R1+R2 together contain 9-16C. (I) are useful antimicrobials e.g. in cleaning, disinfecting or textile-treating compsns., for treating soil etc., at 0.1-10, esp. 0.5-5 wt. %. They are also useful at 0.1-2 wt. % for protecting starches, glues, dispersed dyes, cutting oils etc. against spo lage by bacteria, fungi or other microorganisms. A typical prod. is obtd. by reacting 1-methylaminododecanol-2 with methyl dichloroacetate.
