Abstract

An ophthalmic soln. comprises an aq. soln. of 0.05-20 wt. % sol. polyacrylamide (I) (m. wt. >=75,000, pref. 200,000 to 10,000,000) to provide a viscosity of 0-30,000 cps., and 100-5000 wt. % w.r.t(I) polyethylene-or-propylene-glycols (II) of m.wt 400-6000 (e.g. PEG of m.wt. 4000) as humectant. The soln may be used in humans and domestic animals to treat 'dry eye', to provide cleansing, lubrication and cushioning for the eye after injury, surgery, and in the use of hard or soft contact lenses, and as a carrier for ophthalmic medicaments. The highly heat and pH stable multipurpose solns. have low oral toxicity, high compatibility, with skin or the eye, high pituitousness and pseudoplasticity (rendering) the use of a plasticiser desirable), and are non-irritant. Medicaments applied in the soln. exhibit much greater retention on orbital tissure, thus reducing the amt. of medicament necessary.
