Abstract

A colony of mussels is grown on a post, by winding the post spirally with a long narrow net contg. the larvae of mussels. The larvae emerge from the net and grow up clinging to the post. A post is used which has cross-section in the form of an X or a Y. The net bridges across the gaps between the arms of the post and remains accessible to cutting as an ais to harvesting the crop. As the posts are of standard form, it is possible to use machines in the cutting operation, and also in subsequently cleaning the posts ready for the following year.
