Abstract

The continuous rod cigarette making machine has a cutter (7) particularly used on start-up, when the end of the rod (1) is unsatisfactory and must be cut off and diverted into a waste receptacle, and the remainder of the rod allowed to travel onwards. The cutter is forced downwards, bending the cigarette rod downwards towards a receptacle below, and breaking the rod between a pair of blocks (4, 5) preceding it. In this lowered position, the rod then continues over the flat upper surface of the cutter. When the machine is stopped, the cutter lifts, bending the rod upwards against the blocks (4, 5) thus cutting the rod. An alternative design uses a wheel mounted on an arm, which pulls the rod downwards and pushes it upwards similarly for the cutting operation.
