Abstract
Masts, esp. lighting masts, are mfd. from resin-impregnated rovings by feeding the rovings from a travelling machine in which they pass through a resin impregnating tank, to one or more revolving mandrels, the speed of rotation of the mandrels and the forward speed of the travelling machine alone the length of the mandrels being so adjusted as to produce the desired angle of pitch of the helically wound rovings. Two or more mandrels are mounted along each side of the track of the travelling machine and the machine supplies its rovings to the mandrels on one side of its track during its advance motion, then rotates through 180 degrees, e.g. on a turntable, at the termination of its forward travel and supplies rovings to the mandrels on the opposite side during its return journey. The arrangement enables the winding machine to supply rovings continuously during both its forward and its return journeys, thus eliminating any dead time for return to the starting point. At the same time, there is no need for a long line of successive mandrels, requiring large workshjop floor space, to be adopted to obtain a high output.
