Abstract

A railway siding uses a method of measuring the distance required to coupled a wagon to a train. A continuous section of the track is isolated from all traffic and the distance separating the rear wagon (9) from a reference point within this section is measured. The wagaon is then given a kinetic energy dependent on the distance measured so that it becomes hitched to the train with a known impact force. The distance measurement is made by transmitting a signal along one of the rails (6) of the isolated section of the siding to the reference point. The distance is found by measuring the time elapsed between transmission and reception of the signal. The wave train may be periodic to simplify signal reception. The signal may be ultrasonic radio, electromagnetic, longitudinal or transverse.
