Abstract

Ballast for a fishing net consists of a head section (1), which is inserted in a hollow cylindrical sheath made of plaited plastics, for example polypropylene, fibres. The ballast section is held inside the sheat by the normal tension of the latter. The lead part terminates in a point (16) facilitating its insertion into, or removal from, the plaited sheath, in that it slips between the meshes of the sheath. The ballast sections are used singly or in conjunction with others, for the correct weight of ballast for surface, or deep water fishing nets. Where the ballast required for deep water fishing nets is roughly one hundred and twenty to one hundred and fifty grammes to the linear metre, four or five sections of thirty grammes each are used inside the sheath. Three or four of these sections are removed, to leave a thirty gramme weight ballast section for surface fishing.
