Abstract
In line measuring appts. of the heat of reaction is intended for controlling chemical, biochemical and biological reactors. It is partic. useful in the fermentation industries as it functions in a sterile manner with industrial substrates. As adapted to a fermenter, the device comprises a temp. probe which operates a regulator with an on-off switch applying current to a resistance; Excess heat is eliminated by a fluid passing through a coil. The quantity of heat eliminated is evaluated by measuring the temp. of the fluid at the inlet and the outlet of the reactor. The temp. difference is obtd. from the differential thermometer. The amt. of heat added to the system by the action of the regulator and the resistance is measured. The fermenter is provided with insulation. The various readings are fed into a digital computer, and the results are displayed. The appts. effects an overall measurement of the total activity of the reactor; it is reliable, robust and simple, it does not cause any disturbance in the running conditions. Glucose, solid cellulose and methanol can all be used as substrates.
