Abstract
The automatic emergency lighting system, for public buildings, consists of two separate groups of batteries switched alternately to the emergency lighting circuit when the mains supply fails. The switching is achieved using a bistable relay connected to one end of both battery groups (the other ends are coupled together to a common rail). The relay is pulsed by an RC circuit in series with its operating coil. The RC circuit is charged from the load circuitry. With the relay contacts in one stable state, one battery group is coupled to the lighting circuit. When the contacts change over, the second battery group is connected to the lighting circuit and the first disconnected. Both battery groups are charged over diodes from the mains.
