Abstract

A 9 carat Au alloy contg. (by wt.) 37.5% Au, is approx. 3.5-9% Ag, is approx. 0-15% Zn and bal. Cu, a composite of this alloy and a base metal or alloy, and hollow Au jewellery made from this composite are described. The alloy is used to produce links for chains and bracelets and also for making rings. Used to make hollow jewellery by a process in which the supporting base metal is dissolved in 5% HNO3 or H2SO4. Other 9 carat alloys are usually attacked by this acid and cannot be used to make hollow jewellery. This Au alloy also has a higher m.pt. making it suitable for brazing. After brazing, e.g. to form a ring, the supporting metal is dissolved in acid. The colour of the alloy is also similar to 18 carat Au alloys.
