Abstract

The mechanism fits onto the automatic gearbox of a motor vehicle, and automatically controls the engine braking effect while mechanical braking is taking place. The brake pedal operates circuits controlling the gearbox, causing changing down of gears. Releasing the accelerator closes the main circuit contact switch, and subsequent braking also closes a relay connected with the brake pedal. The circuit supplying this relay includes a series switch connected to the selector lever. This only opens when the lever is placed in "low", and then stops the mechanism functioning. The brake control circuit can be electronic, electric or hydraulic.
