Abstract

The fire escape equipment comprises a hollow rail (1) containing one or more racks (4), mounted vertically and permanently on the front of the building at a point reachable from the inside of any of the floors. A body supporting and suspension device (19) fits inside the rail, and is equipped with one or more pinions (8) meshing with the racks, so that the device can only travel in the rail as the pinions rotate. Braking devices oppose rotation of the pinions and thus slow the supporting device down as it descends under gravity.
