Abstract

The press for indirect extrusion is used esp. for extruding profiles from ingots of materials which are difficult to extrude. The profiling tool held on a hollow press ram is pushed into a housing holding the ingot. This tool system is rapidly loaded and existing direct or indirect extrusion presses can be converted readily without excessive changeover effort. The ingot is clamped between the fixed tool and the moving, force exerting element and the housing is placed over this clamped ingot. Force is exerted in the axial direction and the ingot is extruded through the channel of the press ram. The housing is cleaned before pressing and while it travels to enclose the ingot.
