Abstract

A wind driven machine consists of a large tower erected over a deep pit. A wind driven rotor (3) mounted on top of the tower drives a vertical shaft (6) through bevel gears (5). A worm wheel (9) mounted on hinged extension of the shaft (6) can engage one or other of two worm wheels mounted on parallel shafts (16). Each shaft (16) drives a sprocket (C1) engaging a chain (25, 26) which raises a heavy weight. When one weight strikes a projection, it actuates a chain gear mechanism so that the other shaft is driven. The mass then descends and in doing so drives a generator whilst a second mass is being raised to repeat the cycle.
